Exploring the Legends: XIT Ranch and Texas State Capitol
Did you know that the creation of the XIT Ranch is what funded the construction of the Texas State Capitol?
In the heart of Texas lies a tale as vast and vibrant as the Lone Star State itself – the legends of XIT Ranch and the Texas State Capitol.
Our brokerage owners, Ryan and Lacy Studdard recently went on their son’s 4th grade field trip to the State Capitol in Austin. On this trip they learned about the history of the storied XIT Ranch and its conception that created the Texas State Capitol.
In short, the Texas State Legislature sold 3,000,000 +/- acres of Panhandle public land to an investment syndicate and used the money to build the Texas State Capitol. This sale of land effectively created the largest ranch under one fence at that time and helped bring a symbol of greatness to our State Capitol.
Once spanning over three million acres, the XIT Ranch symbolizes the rugged spirit of the American West. Established in the late 19th century, this sprawling cattle empire became synonymous with cowboy lore, cattle drives, and frontier resilience. Named after the XIT Ranch’s financiers, the Capitol Syndicate, the ranch played a pivotal role in shaping Texas’ cattle industry and cultural identity.
Today, the legacy of XIT Ranch endures through tales of daring cattle drives, larger-than-life ranchers, and the enduring spirit of the Wild West.
